1. Sidewalks Now Have Two Realities
I went for a walk and half the neighborhood had earbuds in. Which means we were all together, technically, but also living in separate radio stations.
It is a strange thing to pass another human being, make eye contact, and realize they may be listening to a murder podcast while you’re just trying to get your steps in.
I gave a small wave anyway. It felt like the analog thing to do.
2. Neighborhood Greetings Have New Rules
Some people still wave like it’s 1998.
Some give a tight little nod, like they’re quietly approving your existence.
Others stare straight ahead with the focus of someone training for the Olympics
or avoiding conversation at a professional level.
I try not to overthink it.
Then I overthink it all the way home.
3. My Car Has Opinions Every Morning
A new sound shows up and I pretend not to hear it. Tap, clunk, whirr — like the car is clearing its throat before giving me bad news.
I turn the radio up and call it “monitoring.”
Retirement tip: if the sound stops suddenly, that may not be progress.
4. I Own More Containers Than Food
I have lids that match nothing and stacks that never reduce. Every cabinet has become a plastic puzzle I did not sign up for.
Somewhere in there is one perfect container I truly love.
Naturally, I cannot find it.
5. This Week’s Unexpected Gratitude
The golden retriever who acted like I mattered.
No earbuds. No hesitation. Just full enthusiasm from a dog who clearly still believes in community.
Best part of my afternoon.

P.S. A little porch news:
The first Ask A Retired Guy book is now available in paperback and Kindle, and PorchMarket is now open at http://BPlol.com .
The book, Volume 1 — Notes from the Porch for the Next Chapter, collects 26 short reflections about retirement, aging, family, friendships, quiet mornings, old routines, and the funny little adjustments nobody puts in the brochure.
And because things got slightly out of hand in the best possible way, PorchMarket now includes mugs, hats, tees, sweatshirts, gift cards, and other porch-approved items.
With Father’s Day coming up, there are gifts for retired dads, grandfathers, husbands, and guys who have earned a slower morning and a better chair.
There are also gifts for retired gals, coffee drinkers, pickleball players, porch-sitters, and the other person in your life who might appreciate something funny, useful, or dangerously accurate.

I love this!! It's a whole new world!! LOL! And the container mystery -- the struggle is real!! I live it everyday myself!
I remember a time when a person walking down the street, talking animatedly to an invisible person, was reportable. Now, they are on the phone with earbuds and a microphone.
It is still disorienting, but I am adapting.
